Homeownership Rates in California Have Declined Dramatically in the Last Forty Years

The decline of adult homeownership in California

Using Census data, BIFYA estimates that essentially all age groups between 21 and 65 are less likely to own a home in 2019 than in 1980. The trend is most pronounced for householders in their 30’s, who have seen a 16.4 to 21.5 percentage point drop in homeownership rates between 1980 and 2019.
